Netherlands’ King and Queen scheduled for state visit to Kenya in March
According to the Royal House, the visit highlights the strong relations and growing cooperation between Kenya and the Netherlands. The Netherlands aims to deepen existing ties and explore new partnerships in various sectors.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máximaof the Netherlands are scheduled to visit Kenya for a state visit from March 18 to 20, 2025, following an invitation from President William Ruto.
The Royal House of the Netherlands confirmed the trip, which marks the royal couple’s first official visit to Kenya.

According to the Royal House, the visit highlights the strong relations and growing cooperation between Kenya and the Netherlands. The Netherlands aims to deepen existing ties and explore new partnerships in various sectors.
“Kenya plays an increasingly influential role on the global stage,” the statement released on Wednesday read, noting that both nations maintain close economic ties as hubs and gateways to larger regions.
It added that the two countries work together actively within the United Nations and other international organisations on shared goals, including democracy, the rule of law, and the independence of the judiciary.
The Royal House also emphasised joint efforts between Kenya and the Netherlands in addressing global challenges such as peace and security, climate change, and food security.
During the state visit, economic missions focusing on sustainable agriculture and water are expected to take place alongside the official engagements.
The Dutch royal couple has a long history of representing their country on the global stage. King Willem-Alexander ascended to the throne on April 30, 2013, succeeding his mother, Queen Beatrix. He is married to Queen Máxima, and they have three daughters: Princess Catharina-Amalia, Princess Alexia, and Princess Ariane.
Under the Dutch Constitution, King Willem-Alexander plays a ceremonial and unifying role in the Netherlands. While the King represents the country domestically and abroad, the ministers hold executive powers and are accountable to Parliament.
The monarch’s duties include weekly meetings with the prime minister, regular consultations with ministers, and signing Acts of Parliament and international treaties.
The upcoming visit highlights the Netherlands’ commitment to fostering collaboration with Kenya on mutual interests, particularly as both nations continue to engage on issues of global significance.
