Why you'll no longer have to go to police stations to report incidents

The Interior ministry explained that a digital system for processing traffic fines and the implementation of a digital occurrence book were central to the discussion.

The national government is moving forward with an ambitious plan to digitise the operations of the National Police Service (NPS). By April 2025, the aim is that citizens will no longer have to physically visit police stations to report incidents.

According to an update on X from the Ministry of Interior on Tuesday, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr Raymond Omollo, held discussions with the European Union Ambassador to Kenya, Henriette Geiger, focusing on the EU's support for the digitisation project.

"Building on the Security and Defense strategic dialogue with Development Partners held in the final quarter of last year, the Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr Raymond Omollo met with the European Union Ambassador to Kenya, Henriette Geiger to discuss support for the digitisation of National Police Service," read the update.

The ministry further explained that a digital system for processing traffic fines and implementing a digital occurrence book were central to the discussion.

The initiative is seen as a response to long-standing issues, such as the mysterious disappearance of records from manual OB books, which have historically hindered the accountability and reliability of police reports.

For his part, PS Omollo issued a statement lauding the meeting's importance in ensuring better service delivery to Kenyans.

"The innovations discussed today aim to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability within the police service while aligning with broader modernization goals," said Omollo

Kenya's journey toward digitising the OB began in 2017, following a nationwide recommendation to phase out the physical books used in police stations.

The digital OB was piloted at Kasarani Police Station in Nairobi on November 22, 2019, under the leadership of the then Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai. It was then subsequently launched on November 3, 2020, by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.
