Met Department issues 5-day weather advisory for moderate rainfall

In the five-day forecast released on Friday, the department listed several regions, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and the Highlands East area, as being among those to expect occasional rainfall over the weekend.

1The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a weather advisory, warning that moderate rainfall will affect various parts of the country from Saturday, January 18, to Wednesday, January 22.

In the five-day forecast released on Friday, the department listed several regions, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and the Highlands East area, as being among those to expect occasional rainfall over the weekend.

According to the Kenya Met, residents in the affected areas should prepare for moderate showers, which are expected to occur mainly in the afternoon.

The counties listed to experience these weather conditions include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and Trans Nzoia. Other areas, such as Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot, will also see similar weather patterns.

"Light showers to moderate rainfall in the afternoons with intermittent sunny intervals in the mornings are expected in the listed regions over the next five days," the department stated in its advisory.

The advisory further indicated that the Highlands East regions, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi, will receive moderate rainfall.

The coast will also experience light rains, with Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta Counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, also listed in the forecast.

In addition to rainfall, the weatherman warned of dry, sunny conditions in many parts of the country.

Temperatures are expected to soar in the North Eastern region, with Wajir forecasted to experience highs of up to 37°C during this period.

In contrast, the Highlands East, including Nairobi, will experience temperatures ranging from 6°C at night to highs of 28°C during the day.

The Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin are expected to see temperatures ranging from 11°C to 32°C, while coastal counties will experience consistent temperatures, with a low of 24°C and a high of 24°C throughout the period.

The department also cautioned that nights will generally be partly cloudy, with strong southeasterly winds of up to 25 knots (12.5 m/s) expected in parts of Turkana and Marsabit Counties.
