Tob Cohen’s widow Sarah Wairimu arrested over fresh murder charges

According to a source who spoke to The Eastleigh Voice, Wairimu was apprehended on Thursday evening at her Nairobi home and taken to the Kilimani Police Station, where she remains in custody.

Tob Cohen’s widow, Sarah Wairimu, has been arrested to face fresh murder charges over the death of her husband in 2019.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, (DPP) on Thursday directed Wairimu be charged with murder contrary to Section 203 as read with 204 of the Penal Code.

According to the DPP, the move comes after overwhelming evidence that shows Wairimu murdered her husband on the night of 19th and 20th July 2019 in the Lower Kabete Area, within Nairobi County.

"Wairimu’s impending arraignment following her arrest on January 23, 2025, comes after the DPP received new material in relation to Cohen’s death from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)," the DPP said in a statement on Thursday.

"Consequently, the DPP made an application for the termination of an inquest into the murder, which was granted. Upon independent and thorough review of the new material, the DPP is satisfied that Wairimu was involved in the death of Tob Cohen."

According to a source who spoke to The Eastleigh Voice, Wairimu was apprehended on Thursday evening at her Nairobi home and taken to the Kilimani Police Station, where she remains in custody.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide unit revealed that fresh evidence has linked Wairimu to the murder of the Dutch businessman.

According to a source privy to the case, the investigators had petitioned the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) over the fresh evidence.

“We (DCI) petitioned the DPP on the evidence. Directions were issued for further investigations. We have now completed filling the gaps and we are ready to prosecute,” the source indicated.

The new developments follow the decision by former DPP Noordin Haji to withdraw the murder trial in 2022. At the time, Haji recommended that the matter be heard as an inquest to address contradictions that had hampered the case.

In the initial trial, Wairimu and her co-accused, Peter Karanja, were charged with murdering Cohen between July 19 and July 20, 2019.

Denied charges

Both denied the charges before Justice Stella Mutuku and were released on a cash bail of Sh2 million each.

However, Karanja was rearrested and later arraigned in Naivasha.

Wairimu has previously maintained her innocence, claiming in 2020 that Cohen was killed and his body dumped in a septic tank at their home while she was in police custody.

She alleged that those responsible were known individuals enjoying protection from certain DCI officers.

With the case reignited, Wairimu is set to appear in court to respond to the fresh charges, as investigators believe they now have the evidence needed to proceed.
