Ousted MPs ordered to vacate offices as new committee leaders take over

Wetang'ula further directed the clerk to facilitate the transition by providing suitable office space and necessary administrative support to the new committee leadership.

Ousted committee chairpersons in the National Assembly have been directed to vacate their offices following the recent leadership re-organisation.

Speaker Moses Wetang'ula noted that they have until Wednesday, March 19, to relinquish their offices to the newly appointed committee heads.

"There are going to be adjustments in the occupying of offices within the precincts of Parliament. Members who had been provided with office spaces on account of their leadership positions in committees and who have since ceased to be chairpersons or vice-chairpersons are required to relinquish such offices not later than Wednesday, March 19, 2025, as we seek to settle the new leadership,” Wetang'ula said during a special sitting.

Committee chairpersons enjoy some of the most spacious offices within the Parliamentary Service Commission’s allocation, particularly those at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). Unlike ordinary MPs’ offices, these come with additional rooms for the secretariat and even boardrooms for meetings.

Among those affected are Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who led the Budget and Appropriations Committee, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, who led the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee, James Gakuya (Embakasi North), who was the chair of the Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Committee and Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia, who chaired the Regional Integration Committee.

In the new leadership changes, Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi has replaced Nyoro, nominated MP Irene Mayaka has taken over from Muhia, while Ikolomani MP Benard Shinali now leads the Trade Committee. Wamuchomba has been succeeded by Runyenjes MP Eric Muchangi.

Wetang'ula further directed the clerk to facilitate the transition by providing suitable office space and necessary administrative support to the new committee leadership.

"The clerk is hereby directed to immediately facilitate the new committee leadership in line with the Constitution, which includes the provision of suitable office space for the chairpersons as well as other administrative support," he said.

However, he assured all members that they would still have office spaces, albeit ones that reflect their new status.

"Nobody will be left unsettled, but if you are not a chairperson or a vice-chairperson, you will get an office commensurate with your status as an ordinary member of the House," he added.

He urged the new chairpersons and vice-chairpersons to take up their roles with diligence and integrity.

"I call upon the new chairpersons and vice-chairpersons to rise to the occasion and steer the committees to effectively and efficiently undertake their mandate," he said.

He also reminded them of their oversight responsibilities and encouraged them to uphold fairness and transparency in their duties.

"Parliament has a constitutional duty to provide oversight, and this responsibility is delegated to the committees you now head. Lead with equity, fairness, and a commitment to serving the people," he said.
