In addition to the salary, the chairperson will be entitled to several benefits, including comprehensive medical coverage for themselves, their spouse, and dependent children.
The generous package reflects the significant responsibilities associated with overseeing Kenya's electoral processes, ensuring transparency, and maintaining trust in the electoral system.
However, this amount may be subject to change after the upcoming budget reading in June 2025.
This is because for government employees, salary adjustments are often influenced by the government's fiscal decisions and the national budget allocation. This means the new figures could be revised based on broader budgetary considerations.
Meanwhile, the IEBC has proposed a substantial budget of Sh 61.7 billion for the 2027 general elections, while the budget for the 2022 general elections was Sh46 billion. This is Sh15.7 billion higher than the last election's budget.
The proposed amount will be allocated to various activities, including voter registration, election preparedness, and the provision of necessary electoral materials.
As the country gears up for the 2027 elections, all eyes will be on the IEBC's funding, the salary of its top officials, and how the funds will be utilised to enhance the credibility and efficiency of the electoral system.
