Weatherman predicts heavy rains, isolated storms in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya

According to the Met Department, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin will experience rain in the morning, followed by showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and at night.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a forecast predicting heavy rainfall across parts of the Nairobi Metropolis within the next 24 hours.

In a statement released on Friday, the weather agency highlighted the likelihood of isolated storms during this period.

"Some parts of the Nairobi Metropolis may experience HEAVY (>20mm) to VERY HEAVY (>50mm) rainfall within 24 hours. Isolated storms may also occur—especially during the afternoon, evening, and morning hours," the Met Department said.

The weather experts further indicated that the rainy conditions are expected to persist across various regions of Kenya over the coming week.

Specific areas projected to experience isolated heavy rainfall include the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South-eastern lowlands, the Coast as well as North-western and North-eastern Kenya.

According to the Met Department, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin will experience rain in the morning, followed by showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and at night.

Similar weather patterns are anticipated in counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

In the North-western region, including Turkana and Samburu, as well as the North-eastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo, residents can expect similar weather patterns.

Meanwhile, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County and others such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi, will see cloudy skies with light morning rains, followed by showers and thunderstorms later in the day and showers at night.

The South-eastern lowlands, comprising Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta Counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, are also set to experience similar weather conditions.

Coastal counties like Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, along with parts of Tana River County, should anticipate showers throughout the day.
