Met Department issues heavy rainfall warning for Western, Rift Valley regions

North eastern Kenya, covering Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties, is expected to have sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy nights.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecasted increased rainfall across western and Rift Valley regions this week, warning of possible isolated heavy downpours in some counties.

According to the latest forecast covering October 21 to October 27, 2025, rains will be accompanied by thunderstorms in several areas, with the weatherman urging residents to remain cautious of flash floods and slippery roads.

Other parts of the country expected to experience rainfall include the Central Highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, the South-eastern Lowlands, the Rift Valley and parts of North-western Kenya.

“Isolated heavy rainfall events may occur over some parts of these regions,” the department said, urging residents to stay alert and take precautions against potential weather-related risks such as flooding or reduced visibility.

Daytime temperatures above 30°C are expected in the Coastal, North eastern and North western regions, while night-time temperatures could drop below 10°C in parts of the Central Highlands, the Central Rift Valley and areas near Mt Kilimanjaro.

Morning rains are likely over a few places in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley counties, while afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected over several areas.

Night showers may also occur over a few places, occasionally spreading to several counties, with isolated heavy rainfall events possible. Counties likely to be affected include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori and Narok.

In North-western Kenya, including Turkana and Samburu counties, morning rains along with afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places. The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, encompassing Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi counties, will experience cloudy mornings with occasional rains over a few areas, giving way to sunny intervals. Afternoon showers are expected over a few to several places, while nights will be partly cloudy, with showers occurring over a few to several locations.

North eastern Kenya, covering Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties, is expected to have sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy nights. However, the department noted the possibility of morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers in some areas of Marsabit County.

In the South-eastern Lowlands, including Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland Tana River County, sunny intervals are expected during the day with partly cloudy nights, though morning rains and afternoon and night showers may occur in a few to several areas during the latter half of the forecast period.

The Coastal region, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the coastal parts of Tana-River County, is expected to have sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy nights, with morning and afternoon showers possible over a few places.

The department has urged residents across all affected regions to remain vigilant and take precautions against potential weather hazards.
