Kenya launches training to prepare new ambassadors for 21st-century diplomacy
The two-week programme at the Foreign Service Academy aims to equip President Ruto’s newly appointed ambassadors with modern diplomatic, economic, and digital skills to strengthen Kenya’s global presence.
Kenya has launched a two-week pre-departure training for its newly appointed ambassadors, part of efforts to professionalise the country’s diplomatic service and align its missions with the demands of 21st-century diplomacy.
The training, held at the Foreign Service Academy (FSA), is designed to equip envoys headed to Ankara, Riyadh, Vienna, Jakarta, Seoul, and other capitals with practical and theoretical skills. It covers a broad range of topics — from consular management and economic diplomacy to digital engagement and protocol etiquette.

Ambassador Patrick Wamoto, the acting director-general, told the diplomats that persuasion, patience, and cultural intelligence are essential traits in modern diplomacy.
“A diplomat is both a negotiator and a bridge-builder. Learn the language, master the culture, and use every opportunity to tell Kenya's story,” he said.
The programme underscores Nairobi’s ambition to project a sharper and more confident foreign policy on the global stage.
As international relations increasingly intertwine with issues such as climate change, cybersecurity, and energy transition, the Foreign Affairs Ministry wants its envoys to be adaptable and capable of managing both the geopolitical and economic aspects of their assignments.
The new cohort — appointed by President William Ruto earlier this month — includes ambassadors to Ankara, Bangkok, Riyadh, and Vienna
