IEBC urges Parliament to fast-track election reforms for fairness and speed

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has urged Parliament to accelerate the passage of critical election law amendments, highlighting their importance in promoting fairness and transparency.
IEBC Chairman Erastus Ethekon said the proposed Election Financing Regulations Amendment Act will allow the commission to effectively monitor campaign spending and ensure that all political participants operate on equal terms.

Speaking on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, Ethekon called on Members of Parliament to move swiftly so that the IEBC can establish the necessary frameworks to implement the regulations as soon as they are enacted.
“There are concerns around campaign financing. This is a concern that Kenyans have raised. We want to see the law passed. Those campaign financing regulations are what we, as the commission, need in order to begin the work of regulating campaign financing so that we can create a level playing field for everyone,” he said.
Ethekon explained that these measures are crucial for transparency in election campaigns, giving all candidates an equal chance to compete.
He also highlighted that Parliament is reviewing multiple bills aimed at upgrading the IEBC’s technology, which will allow election results to be transmitted almost instantly, enhancing public confidence.
The chair further noted that the timely enactment of these laws would strengthen the commission’s ability to manage elections smoothly and impose tougher penalties on those who attempt to disrupt the process.
“Kuna sheria ambazo tumepropose for amendment just to make things better. If the election offences law is to be tightened, it is fitting to enhance the punishment penalties for those people who are messing with the electoral process,” Ethekon added.
He reminded Kenyans that the commission operates under the Constitution, particularly Article 88, and that existing laws guide every stage of the electoral process.
Fast-tracking these amendments, Ethekon said, will bring Kenya closer to holding elections that are fair, transparent, and technologically advanced.
