Senior police officer collapses, dies at home in Nandi County
The National Police Service is mourning AIG Philip Kipchirchir Tuimur, who died at home in Nandi, as officers seize illegal motor vehicle number plates and arrest nine suspects in separate raids.
The National Police Service (NPS) is mourning the demise of Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police Philip Kipchirchir Tuimur.
The senior officer passed away on Saturday morning at his home in Kabutie area of Chesumei, Nandi County.
Police said his brother, Andrew Tuimur, confirmed the officer's demise, saying he 'collapsed and lost consciousness' while at home at around 5:00 am.
The family said they rushed him to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.
His body was then taken to Samaritan Farewell Home for preservation, awaiting post-mortem.
Tuimur was based at Vigilance House, Nairobi, prior to his death.
Meanwhile, police recovered a large cache of assorted motor vehicle number plates in Kariobangi South on Friday during an intelligence-led operation by officers from Buru Buru and Dandora police stations.
The team raided a residential house reported to have been used for the illegal processing and storage of the plates, where they seized 34 complete plates, 64 incomplete pieces, 34 half-cut plates, three rolls of chassis number stickers, one roll of blue iron sheeting, two rolls of white and yellow reflective sheets and various number plate frames.
"The items are suspected to have been used in the manufacture and alteration of vehicle license plates. The suspect connected to the premises narrowly escaped and is currently being pursued," NPS said, noting the arrest aids the ongoing probe into cases of stolen vehicle trafficking and falsification of registration numbers.
The exhibits have been secured for further forensic analysis.
Elsewhere, on Friday, police arrested nine members of a suspected criminal gang in Bushangala, Kakamega, following an intelligence-led operation in the area.
The individuals are suspected of involvement in organised crime, including criminal damage to property and assaults on police officers.
"They were found in possession of offensive weapons, including machetes, bows, arrows and a club. They have been placed in custody pending processing for arraignment in court, while the recovered exhibits have been secured as evidence," NPS said.
