General of Great Renown: Francis Ogolla’s distinguished legacy

A trained fighter pilot with experience from the US Air Force, General Ogolla is widely recognised for his expertise in various fields.

In a tragic turn of events, General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the Chief of Defence Forces of Kenya, was involved in a helicopter crash on April 18, 2024, less than a year after assuming his new role.

The incident occurred at the Kaben-Cheptulel border between Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot counties.

General Ogolla has a special connection with April. He first joined the Kenya Defense Forces on April 24, 1985, marking the beginning of a distinguished military career spanning nearly four decades.

Throughout his tenure, he demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication, earning accolades and promotions along the way.

A trained fighter pilot with experience from the US Air Force, General Ogolla is widely recognised for his expertise in various fields, including imagery intelligence, counter-terrorism, and accident investigation. His contributions to the modernisation of the Kenya Air Force earned him induction into the National Defense College Hall of Fame in 2010.

On April 28, 2023, President William Ruto appointed General Ogolla to the prestigious position of Chief of Defence Forces, a testament to his exemplary service and leadership within the military.

The following day, his swearing-in ceremony and investiture of ranks took place at State House, Nairobi, where he expressed gratitude for the president's trust and confidence in him.

"With great humility, I thank the president for the trust and confidence in appointing me to serve as the Chief of Defence Forces," General Ogolla remarked after his appointment last year.

"I joined the KDF 39 years ago, and I believe that every experience and lesson that I have gone through has contributed to this day."

Before he was appointed Chief of Defense Forces, General Ogolla served as the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces, where he played a crucial role in supporting and advising the military leadership.

Chopper crash

A helicopter crash that claimed his life occurred on April 18, 2024, and has since sent shockwaves across the country.

President William Ruto confirmed that there were twelve top military officials on board at the time of the incident; 10 died while two survived.

Other killed in the crash include; Brigadier Suale Saidi, Colonel Duncan Keitan, Lieutenant Colonel David Sawe, Major George Benson Magodu, Captain Sorah Mohamed, Captain Hilary Litary, Snr Sgt John Kinya Muriithi, Sgt Cliffonce Muriithi and Sgt Rose Nyawira.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, and authorities are working diligently to uncover the truth behind this tragic event.

As the nation mourns the loss of lives and awaits further details regarding the course of the accident, General Francis Omondi Ogolla's contributions to the defence forces and his unwavering commitment to serving his country will be remembered with respect and admiration.
