Former Nairobi water company employee to face trial for forging Zetech diploma to secure job

A former employee of the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) accused of forging academic certificates to obtain a job has been found to have a case to answer.

Appearing before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, Brenda Nelly Sulungai was placed on her defence after the court found that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to support all three charges against her.

In the ruling, the court found that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Sulungai forged her academic certificates to secure employment.

Sulungai was formally charged on October 31, 2024, with forgery.

The court heard that the accused forged a Diploma in Community Development and Social Work, purporting it to be a genuine document issued by Zetech University on 6th November 2015.

It is further alleged that on July 4, 2019, she presented the forged diploma to the Managing Director of NCWSC as a genuine qualification issued by Zetech University.

The court heard that on November 22, 2021, while working as a community development assistant at NCWSC, the accused knowingly gave false information by claiming in her records that she had a diploma and submitting the forged certificate for official updates.

The prosecution called four witnesses and presented 25 documentary exhibits.

The court heard that the evidence tendered showed the signatures on the disputed certificate did not match those of the authorised signatories, specifically the vice-chancellor and deputy vice-chancellor of Zetech University.

The accused will appear in court on August 22 for a defence hearing.
