Security agencies said the measures were intended to prevent unrest; however, the restrictions have paralysed transport and heightened tension across Nairobi.

Major roads into Nairobi were sealed off early Thursday as police mounted roadblocks ahead of the June 25 Gen Z protest anniversary, leaving commuters stranded and businesses shuttered across the capital.
A spot check by The Eastleigh Voice found key streets, including Kenyatta Avenue, the junction with Muindi Mbingu Street, and Standard Street, largely deserted. Outering Road, Thika Road, Ngong Road and other major arteries into the city were also cut off.
Parliament has also been blocked off with barbed‑wire barricades erected by police ahead of the anniversary, to forestall the dramatic scenes of June 2024 when protesters breached the House during anti‑government demonstrations.
Security agencies said the measures were meant to prevent unrest; however, the restrictions have paralysed transport and heightened tension across Nairobi. Police have arrested several people while moving to block the memorial protests.
Meanwhile, the United Opposition has criticised police barricades, saying the restrictions prevented people from accessing their workplaces.
Speaking after the Opposition leaders’ meeting at Serena, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka vowed that, if elected president in 2027, his administration would formalise the day as a public holiday.
PLP leader Martha Karua, on the other hand, called on police to provide security, insisting opposition leaders are peaceful and law‑abiding citizens.
Former Chief Justice David Maraga, at the same time, reiterated calls for solidarity with the victims and their families, saying the government cannot avoid accountability.
