Following the lapse of the 24-hour vacation notice, 138 camps have been set up to accommodate people living in flood-prone areas.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Saturday said the camps are hosting 62,061 people from 14,771 households.

"The government clarifies that as of noon, May 4, 2024, 138 camps spread across 18 counties have already been set up to offer temporary shelter to the public displaced by floods," he said in a statement.

The camps, according to the ministry, are situated mostly in primary schools, churches and colleges.

The list of the temporary shelter camps has been published and publicly displayed at the offices of the respective Assistant Chiefs, Chiefs, Assistant County Commissioners, Deputy County Commissioners and County Commissioners.

As the rains continue to saturate soils and pose risks of landslides and flooding, Kindiki said the National Government Administration Officers are diligently monitoring the situation.

They stand ready to establish more shelter points if necessary, under the supervision of County Security Committees.

In addition to issuing relocation and evacuation orders to communities residing near 178 dams and water reservoirs in 33 counties, County Security Committees are tasked with ongoing monitoring of other potential risky areas.

According to the CS, the committees are also directed to collaborate with County Governments and stakeholders to conduct outreach programs on disaster preparedness and emergency response measures.

"The committees will also Identify and publicize assembly points for those relocating or are being evacuated, reception centres at the temporary shelter camps and put in place verifiable documentation procedures for all persons hosted within each temporary shelter camp," Kindiki added.

Also, security agencies have been instructed to ensure that the relocation and evacuation processes are carried out efficiently, orderly, and with compassion for those affected.

"The government remains committed to providing support and coordinating efforts to mitigate the impact of floods and respond effectively to emergencies," Kindiki added.
