Nairobi is among counties that will receive moderate to heavy rainfall on July 6-10, the Kenya Meteorological Department has announced.

Met Director Kennedy Thiong’o announced that significant rainfall is expected over the highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and Northwestern Kenya.

The counties in these regions are Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

“These counties will experience rains in the morning, with showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. The maximum temperatures will reach 31°C, while the minimum will drop to 07°C,” Thiong’o said.

Northwestern counties, such as Turkana and Samburu, are expected to see showers and thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging from a high of 36°C to a low of 12°C.

Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi, will experience cloudy mornings which will break into sunny intervals.

Thiong’o noted that in the afternoon and evening, there will be showers over a few places, with temperatures peaking at 28°C and dipping to 05°C.

Meanwhile, North-Eastern counties, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, will experience sunny intervals in the morning and afternoon, transitioning to partly cloudy skies at night.

The temperatures in these areas are expected to range from a maximum of 37°C to a minimum of 15°C.

Similar conditions are expected in Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties.

In the coastal regions of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, the weather will be predominantly sunny in the morning and afternoon, with showers expected in a few places on Wednesday, July 10. Temperatures are expected to reach up to 31°C, with lows of 21°C.

The forecast also highlighted strong southerly to south-easterly winds, with speeds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s), expected over some parts of the Coast and North-eastern Kenya.

Intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are anticipated throughout the week over part of the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the south-eastern lowlands, and the Rift Valley.
