In a decisive move aimed at tackling the persistent issue of power outages in the country, the Cabinet, chaired by President William Ruto, has directed the Ministry of Energy to take immediate action. The frequent power failures, discussed during the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, were identified as a significant concern impacting both Kenya's investment profile and the general public.

To address the issue comprehensively, the Cabinet resolved to unbundle the transmission line system, separating the generation, transmission, and distribution of power. This strategic move aims to prevent widespread blackouts in the event of a line failure, ensuring a more robust and resilient power supply infrastructure.

One key aspect of the plan involves the construction of the Bomet-Narok transmission line, which has faced delays since its funding in 2016 due to legal disputes. The new line is expected to alleviate overloading issues on existing transmission lines, a major contributor to power outages.

During the Cabinet meeting, it was also disclosed that negotiations on the Kenya-European Union Economic Partnership Agreement had been successfully concluded. This significant agreement, set to be signed at State House next week, is poised to grant Kenya increased access to the European Union market, fostering economic growth and international trade.
