Ruto: Government to address cases of missing and injured protesters

President William Ruto on Thursday called on Kenyans with missing relatives to forward the details of their kin for action.

He was responding to a question by the national Sufuria Movement coordinator Sospeter Ojwang who asked what the government's plan for compensation to the families whose kin were injured and killed during this year's antigovernment protests.

The President took the opportunity to call on affected families to come forward and inform the Ministry of Interior of their missing, injured or killed kin for reprieve.

"If there is a family that their child or friend or relative that went to a demonstration last year or this year and never came back, I want to know the names because I will take firm and decisive action because as I talk to you today, I do not have a single name of anyone who has been abducted or disappeared," said the President during the Town Hall meeting in Kisumu.

The President said the government is developing a framework that will look into offering support to families of persons killed and injured during the demonstrations.

"You know I assembled the Cabinet the other day. The Ministry of Interior is working on the numbers are we will see how we are going to work together on that program," he said.

President Ruto added that Kenyans have a right and freedom of association within the parameters of the law and none should be subjected to any inhuman treatment because of their political persuasion.

"You have told me that there were people who were abducted and I made a commitment to the people of Kenya and I want to look you in the face and say that under my administration I do not want a situation where a Kenyan disappears. There were days when people were found 20, 30 in River Yala here executed, I want to promise you and the people of Kenya that under my administration there will be no people in River Yala or any other place," he said.
