Speaker Kingi submits list of absentee landlord farms to Ruto for squatter resettlement

He said that the list has been handed to the President, and during his next visit to the Coast, President Ruto will indicate which farms will be prioritised for purchase so that residents can begin to own land.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has announced that some farms owned by absentee landlords have been submitted to President William Ruto to help prioritise which lands should be purchased to resettle squatters along Kenya’s Coast.

Kingi made the announcement in Mazeras while speaking at the funeral of MP Denar Hamisi, who passed away on December 6, 2025.

He said that the list has been handed to the President, and during his next visit to the Coast, President Ruto will indicate which farms will be prioritised for purchase so that residents can begin to own land.

The submission of the list is part of a broader government initiative aimed at resolving long-standing historical land disputes that have left thousands of residents without proper land ownership documents.

The initiative builds on a government policy announced by President Ruto in February, which tasked Kingi and Cabinet Secretaries Alice Wahome (Lands), Hassan Joho (Mining), and Salim Mvurya (Sports) with identifying genuine absentee landlords for compensation.

President Ruto said at the time that funds had been allocated to pay absentee landlords and that the process would help address historical injustices along the Coast.

The announcement comes as part of a broader development agenda for the Coast region. President Ruto highlighted electricity expansion projects, including Sh2 billion allocated to Kilifi County as part of a Sh10 billion initiative to connect 14 marginalised counties to reliable power.

Transmission lines linking Rabai-Bomani-Kilifi and Kilifi-Weru-Malindi are progressing, while the Sh2.1 billion Baricho Bridge connecting Malindi and Magarini is 98 per cent complete. These projects aim to support industrial growth, create jobs, and improve livelihoods.
