After a cagey first half that ended goalless, the Sugar Millers made a telling impact early in the second period. Head coach introduced David Omondi at the break, replacing Felix Cassilas, and the change paid dividends.
Five minutes after the restart, Jimmy Owili broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, sending the home fans into celebration with a well-taken finish to put Mara Sugar ahead.
Further substitutions followed as Silas Oningo replaced Tonny Omondi on the hour mark, adding energy to the attack. The decisive moment arrived in the 66th minute when Timothy Ekhavi fouled Oningo inside the box, prompting the referee to point to the spot.
Dennis Cheruiyot stepped up a minute later and calmly converted the penalty to double Mara Sugar’s advantage and effectively seal the contest.
Mara Sugar managed the remainder of the game professionally, with Joseph Okwenda introduced late on as the Sharks struggled to mount a response. Oningo was booked in stoppage time, but it did little to dampen a strong afternoon for the hosts.
The win lifts Mara Sugar to 17 points and further away from the relegation zone, while Kariobangi Sharks remain at the bottom, their winless run extending to seven matches.
In the day’s headline fixture, Kenya Police FC and AFC Leopards played out an intense but scoreless draw in a match that lived up to its billing despite the lack of goals.
AFC Leopards started brightly, with Tyson Otieno testing the Police goal early on as the Ingwe dominated the opening exchanges. The Police goalkeeper was called into action repeatedly, pulling off crucial saves to deny Tyson and later Julius Masaba and Victor Omune as Leopards pressed aggressively.
Police responded with spells of pressure of their own, with Job Ochieng producing a double save midway through the first half to keep the contest level. The opening period also saw bookings for James Kinyanjui, Brian Nyongesa, David Simiyu and Taychick Musengo as the intensity rose.
The second half was briefly disrupted by injuries to Kayci Odhiambo, with the game stopping twice before resuming at the hour mark amid light showers.
Both coaches rang the changes in search of a breakthrough. Leopards introduced Kelly Madada, Brian Wanyama, Shichenje, Beja and Victor Otieno, while Police brought on Tobias Otieno, Erick Zakayo, Clinton Kinanga, David Okoth and Barska Badi.
Despite sustained pressure from both sides, goalkeepers Humphrey Katasi for AFC Leopards and Job Ochieng for Police stood firm, producing a series of impressive saves to preserve the clean sheets.
Police came closest late on from a corner, while Katasi made another outstanding stop in the 87th minute to deny the hosts a winner. In the end, neither side could find the decisive moment as the match ended in a hard-fought stalemate.
The draw slightly reshapes the title race, with Kenya Police FC moving to the top of the table on 21 points. Gor Mahia, Kakamega Homeboyz and Posta Rangers remain locked on 20 points each, separated only by goal difference. AFC Leopards also stay firmly in the mix, sitting sixth but still within touching distance of the summit.
At the bottom, Mara Sugar’s victory provides breathing space, while Kariobangi Sharks’ struggles deepen as they continue to prop up the table.
