By |

"Six uninformed people went to courage base and forcefully took my husband, Boniface Mwangi, from the house," the wife, Njeri Mwangi, stated.

Update: Boniface Mwangi is being held at Kamukunji Police Station.

Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid says that he has received reliable information that human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has been abducted by unknown people.

Khalid, also a renowned human rights activist, added that they suspected the assailants were police officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

"Boniface Mwangi was taken to an unknown destination. He was picked up from his family home in Ukambani (Courage Base) around 7 am," Khalid said via his X page.

Mwangi's wife, Njeri Mwangi, added, "This morning at around 7.15, six uninformed people went to courage base and forcefully took my husband from the house. I have no idea who, why, or where they have taken him."

The DCI has not yet responded to the allegations.

Mwangi has allegedly been abducted a few hours before leading protests during the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon today. The activist, through his social media pages, mobilised protesters to join the marathon in demonstrations titled #OccupyStanChart.

Yesterday, the activist called on supporters to turn the marathon into a platform for peaceful protest and to adhere to a detailed plan. He urged attendees to wear the national flag as part of their gear, and don bandanas with messages criticising the government.

He also encouraged participants to capture protest chants and incidents of police brutality, sharing them online as a form of digital activism.

Protesters were to finally converge at Uhuru Gardens, where the award ceremony for the marathon would take place.

Emphasising the importance of remaining calm and peaceful, Mwangi framed the event as both a sporting celebration and an opportunity for political expression.

Activists and social media users have expressed outrage over the disappearance of Boniface Mwangi, swiftly mobilising to amplify the #FreeBonifaceMwangi hashtag.
