Whitman has served as head of the Kenyan embassy since August 2022.

The US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman has resigned.

The resignation follows the election of Republican candidate Donald Trump as the next US president.

Whitman, who has served as the US Ambassador to Kenya since August 2022, on Wednesday expressed pride in her tenure, citing numerous accomplishments in strengthening US-Kenya relations.

"It has been an honour and privilege to serve the American people through strengthening our partnership with Kenya," Whitman said.

She highlighted her role in leading initiatives that aimed to improve the lives of both Kenyans and Americans, particularly in the areas of health, security, and economic growth.

One of her key achievements was securing US emergency funding in response to the catastrophic flooding in 2023.

She also pointed out the ongoing efforts in combating diseases like malaria, HIV, and mpox.

"The US government prioritises the health and welfare of our friends in Kenya," Whitman added

Whitman also pointed to the elevation of Kenya as the United States' first Major Non-NATO ally in sub-Saharan Africa as a landmark achievement during her tenure.

"This year, the United States elevated Kenya as its first Major Non-NATO ally in sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting the importance our countries place on standing shoulder to shoulder to protect our shared democratic values and enhance security," she stated.

In addition to her diplomatic work, Whitman worked to boost trade and business ties between the US and Kenya.

She played a pivotal role in increasing US investment in the country, which she noted reached historic highs during her time as ambassador.

Whitman also addressed challenges in consular services, significantly reducing visa appointment wait times from over two years to just two months, among other improvements.

In addition, she acknowledged the continued success of the US-Kenya partnership, which she believes will thrive under the leadership of Chargé d'Affaires Marc Dillard, who will now oversee the embassy's operations until a new ambassador is appointed.

"Our relations are stronger than ever, and I am confident this trajectory will continue," Whitman said.

She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve, thanking the dedicated teams at the embassy and the people of Kenya for their friendship.

"I will depart Kenya full of gratitude for the team that has worked tirelessly on my behalf, for the opportunity to serve my country, and for the friendship offered by the government and the people of the beautiful Republic of Kenya," Whitman said.
