Met predicts heavy rains and flooding across several regions this weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a rainfall advisory, forecasting continued heavy rains over several regions of the country from November 22, 2024, to November 26, 2024.
The weather agency has warned that the highlands east region, which includes Nairobi County, will experience significant rainfall, with possible flooding.

In its weekend advisory, Kenya Met revealed that heavy rains would also affect regions west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the south-eastern lowlands, the Coast, and parts of north-western and north-eastern Kenya.
The downpour is expected to begin in the afternoon and extend into the evening, with moderate to heavy rainfall predicted for the counties in the highlands east region. These counties include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.
Residents in these areas should be on the lookout for potential flooding, especially since the department expects the rain to continue into the night.
Other counties, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, and Narok, have also been flagged as areas to expect heavy rainfall.
Other counties that may experience rainfall include Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
"Similar to other regions, we anticipate the onset of rain in these areas in the afternoon," Kenya Met said.
"On the other hand, we anticipate lighter rains over the next five days in the counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as the coastal areas of Tana River County."
This advisory comes after Kenya Met Director David Gikungu recently urged the public to brace for the short rains, which are expected to last until December 2024.
Temperature advisory
Alongside the rainfall, Kenya Met also issued a temperature advisory, warning of cooler temperatures in several regions.
"For the first two days of the forecast period, we expect night temperatures in the highlands east counties, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi, to drop as low as 12°C."
Mer said these temperatures will further decrease to 10 °C during the remaining days of the forecast.
Meanwhile, the north eastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Turkana, and Samburu will experience high daytime temperatures, with highs reaching up to 37°C for the first three days before cooling slightly to 35°C for the remaining days of the week.
Kenya Met has advised residents in affected regions to take necessary precautions, particularly those living in flood-prone areas, and to stay updated on weather changes over the coming days.
