Madaraka Express to resume stopover in Voi starting December 15

By |

The 10 pm Madaraka Express passenger service, which operates between Nairobi and Mombasa, will now pause in Voi for three minutes every day, both during the day and night.

Passengers travelling to and from Voi will now have a convenient stopover on the Madaraka Express starting Sunday, December 15.

This announcement comes after Kenya Railways confirmed that the train will resume its brief 3-minute stop at the Voi station, providing residents with a new connection option for rail travel to Mombasa and Nairobi.

In a statement issued by Kenya Railways, the agency shared that the 10 pm Madaraka Express passenger service, which operates between Nairobi and Mombasa, will now pause in Voi for three minutes every day, both during the day and night.

"We are pleased to announce that effective December 15, the 10 pm Madaraka Express passenger service train to and from Nairobi terminus will now take a 3-minute stopover at Voi station," the notice read.

The exact times for the stopovers are as follows: the Nairobi-bound train will arrive in Voi between 2:05 am and 2:08 am, while the train travelling from Mombasa to Nairobi will stop between 11:45 pm and 11:48 pm.

This change is expected to greatly benefit passengers from the region, making it easier for them to connect with the broader rail network.

Kenya Railways expressed its commitment to enhancing services, saying, "We look forward to having you on board as we endeavour to serve you better."

Residents' concerns

This resumption of the stopover comes just one week after President William Ruto pledged to address the concerns of Voi residents about the absence of a night-time stop on the Madaraka Express.

Speaking during the launch of the Devki iron ore pelletization plant in Manga, Taita Taveta, President Ruto reassured the public that the necessary steps would be taken.

"You have asked me that the train that passes here, especially at night, goes without stopping... you want it to stop here so that you can travel?" President Ruto said, adding, "I have engaged the relevant ministry and they have assured it will start making a stop."

Before this announcement, the Madaraka Express train had made daytime stops at Voi station, but no provisions were made for the evening and night trains.

In January 2023, a brief five-minute stop was implemented for the 3 pm train, but night-time stops had previously been suspended.
