KeNHA issues advisory as heavy traffic slows travel on Nairobi-Nakuru highway

Motorists have been advised to consider using alternative routes to avoid delays and reduce congestion on the main highways.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a travel advisory to motorists using the Nairobi-Nakuru (A8) and Rironi-Mai Mahiu-Naivasha (A8S) highways due to increased traffic ahead of the holiday season.
In a notice on Friday, KeNHA Director-General Kung'u Ndung'u urged road users to exercise patience and adhere to lane discipline to ensure the safety of all travellers.

"We are committed to ensuring smooth travel during this festive period. Motorists should cooperate with traffic officers and follow the guidance provided along these routes," Ndung'u said.
To manage the surge in traffic, KeNHA, in collaboration with traffic police, has stationed officers along the highways to provide traffic control and assistance.
Motorists have also been advised to consider using alternative routes to avoid delays and reduce congestion on the main highways.
The alternative routes include the Naivasha-Njabini-Ol Kalou-Dundori-Lanet-Nakuru route, the Flyover-Njabini-Ol Kalou-Dundori-Lanet-Nakuru route, and the Ngong-Suswa-Narok-Mau Narok-Nakuru route.
"Alternative routes have been provided to ease congestion. We urge drivers to plan their journeys in advance and stay updated on traffic conditions," Ndung'u said.
Earlier, St John Ambulance Kenya had issued an alert to motorists, informing them of heavy traffic congestion between Kimende and Flyover, as well as along the Limuru-Maai Mahiu stretch.
Videos seen by The Eastleigh Voice showed some drivers had left their vehicles by the roadside.
"There is heavy traffic congestion along Nairobi Nakuru highway between Kimende and Flyover and also along the Limuru-Maimahiu stretch. Avoid the area if you can," the post by St John Ambulance warned.
Many Kenyans are travelling to their rural homes as is common during the Christmas festive season.
On Thursday, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi urged Kenyans to prioritise safety during the festive season.
Mudavadi asked all motorists, especially public service vehicle (PSV) drivers on long-distance routes, to drive carefully and follow traffic regulations.
To help prevent road accidents, the government will increase highway patrols, enforce vehicle roadworthiness, and take action against illegal and unlicensed PSVs.
"Every officer must be actively engaged in monitoring, reporting and addressing any issues of non-compliance to road safety regulations. This is critical to the national road safety goal of reducing road traffic fatalities by five per cent before 2028," Mudavadi said.
