Traffic disruptions expected as KURA closes Mlolongo's Quarry Road for 2 months

The road, which was tarmacked just over five years ago, connects Mombasa Road to Kangundo Road and is a vital route for many in Machakos County.

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced the closure of Quarry Road in the Mlolongo/Syokimau area for two months, a move that could disrupt traffic in the region.

The closure, which will run from Monday, February 24, at 6 am to Friday, April 25, at 6 pm, is part of ongoing rehabilitation and improvement works along the road.

In a notice on Saturday, KURA urged the public to use alternative routes during this period. The authority also advised motorists, including light and heavy truckers, to follow the guidance of traffic police and marshals to ease congestion.

"We urge motorists to use alternative routes and follow guidance by traffic police and marshals," the authority said.

For light truckers coming from Katani Center, the route will be diverted through Syokimau Airport Road, with a left turn leading to the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Heavy truckers from the same area will be rerouted towards Ebenezer Mall and Tuffoam Industries, where they will connect to the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Deteriorating condition

However, its deteriorating condition, worsened by heavy flooding last year, has raised serious concerns.

Residents and motorists have long complained about the numerous potholes and cracks, which have led to costly vehicle breakdowns.

The situation was further aggravated by drainage problems, particularly during floods, and heavy trucks ferrying construction materials from nearby quarries.

This rehabilitation project follows months of complaints from both residents and truckers using the road.

The renovations were first announced by National Assembly Transport and Infrastructure Committee Chairperson George Kariuki (Ndia) in July 2024, who assured that repairs would begin soon.

"According to the Ministry of Roads, there are immediate plans to prioritize repairs to the damaged sections of the Mlolongo-Quarry-Katani Road," Kariuki had told the House at the time.
