Somalia's Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre reshuffles cabinet, appoints new deputy ministers

This reshuffle is perceived as a move to bolster the effectiveness of Somalia’s government and improve strategic sectors, including security, commerce, and infrastructure.

Somalia's Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Monday reshuffled his cabinet, making significant changes to key ministerial positions, including appointing new deputy ministers just three months after a previous mini-reshuffle in December.

In the latest cabinet reshuffle, key ministries have new ministers, including Defence, with Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi appointed as the new Defence Minister, replacing Abdikadir Mohamed Nur, who has been moved to Ports and Marine Transport. Mahamud Mohamed Nur is the new Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation; Mohamed Abdikadir Ali is the new Minister of Youth and Sports, while Mohamud Ahmed Adan is the newly named Minister of Trade and Industry.

The PM also appointed 11 other deputy ministers. The last cabinet reshuffle occurred on December 22 last year. The prime minister did not give any reasons for the latest reshuffle, only indicating that the new cabinet ministers and deputies appointments take effect immediately.

Key Highlights of the Reshuffle:

Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, formerly the Defence Minister, has been appointed as the Minister of Ports and Marine Transport. This shift suggests a strategic alignment, potentially aimed at strengthening Somalia’s maritime infrastructure and port management, aligning with UAE’s investment interests in the sector.
