Leaders advocate peace for development in North Eastern region

By |

Cabinet Secretary for Defense Aden Duale joined the call for collaboration with security officers to address insecurity, which he identified as a major impediment to development.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has urged residents of North Eastern to prioritise peace and stability for meaningful development in the region.

Speaking in Bura East Sub County on Friday, Wetang'ula emphasised the critical role of security in various sectors, stating, "All sectors of development, including education and road networks in the region, need a secure environment that will enable their implementation."

He highlighted the importance of uplifting the education sector, citing it as a catalyst for social equality and poverty alleviation. Wetang'ula commended Fafi Member of Parliament Salah Yaqub for his efforts in promoting education.

Mp Salah recently launched initiatives such as free secondary education and school milk for primary pupils to enhance school enrollment and improve learners' well-being.

Cabinet Secretary for Defense Aden Duale joined the call for collaboration with security officers to address insecurity, which he identified as a major impediment to development.

CS Duale warned against any association with terrorists, emphasising, "We will not condone any association with terrorists who are sabotaging the development progress in the region."

He noted the improved security in Wajir and Mandera due to collaboration between security organs and the public.

Host MP Salah Yaqub introduced the 'Usalama na Elimu' program, involving motorbikes to facilitate the mobility of school heads and chiefs. Yaqub stated, "The local chiefs will use the motorbikes to address security concerns and ensure effective service delivery within their jurisdictions."

The event saw the presence of various leaders, including Principal Secretary for East Africa Community Abdi Dubat Fidhow, Eldas MP Aden Keinan, Garissa Town MP Dekow M Barrow, Lagdera MP Abdikadir Mohamed, Ijara MP Abdi Ali, and others.

The leaders, led by Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula, also endorsed Raila Odinga for the African Union Commission (AUC) chair position.

The position of AUC chairperson is becoming vacant next year as the current officeholder, Moussa Faki from Chad, is concluding his two-term tenure. This role holds the crucial responsibilities of serving as the chief executive officer and legal representative of the AU.

The chairperson is tasked with supervising administrative and financial affairs, championing the objectives of the AU, and actively engaging with various stakeholders.
