The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has taken a decisive step to boost the role of young people in global peace and security by adopting a new resolution on Friday.
The move, endorsed unanimously by all 15 members, aims to strengthen the youth, peace and security agenda and ensure that the voices of young people are actively considered in conflict prevention and peacebuilding efforts.

The resolution, jointly presented by Sierra Leone and Guyana, calls on UN member states to deepen their engagement with youth in peace initiatives and to expand national action plans under the Youth, Peace and Security framework.
It also emphasises closer collaboration between the Council, UN agencies, and the Peacebuilding Commission, while safeguarding the meaningful participation of young people who brief the Council.
Before the vote, Sierra Leone’s UN envoy Michael Imran Kanu highlighted the urgent need to acknowledge both the challenges and contributions of youth in conflict situations.
“Across the globe, young people are actively engaged in the front lines of conflict. They represent the core of both combatants and victims of conflict. They bear the brunt of violence, including through the disruption of their education and erosion of development opportunities,” Kanu said.
He added that the Security Council has not consistently focused on youth issues, even as the radicalisation and recruitment of young people by terrorists, extremist groups, and criminal gangs continues to pose serious threats.
“We are convinced that adoption of this resolution will help close critical gaps, catalyse implementation and reinforce confidence among young people that their voices matter in shaping peace and security outcomes,” Kanu stated.
The new resolution is expected to create stronger pathways for youth involvement in peace processes, offering opportunities for young people to contribute meaningfully to the design and execution of initiatives that prevent conflict and promote stability worldwide.
