Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye honours Kenya’s freedom struggle

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye travelled to Kenya to serve as the chief guest at the national Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui County, where he delivered a tribute to Kenya's freedom struggle and deeper continental cooperation.
In his address at the Ithookwe Stadium, Faye stated, "Heroes and heroines deserve admiration and respect. The struggle for freedom in Kenya came at a heavy cost," tying Nairobi's commemorative moment to broader dynamics of post-colonial agency.

He went on to condemn Senegal's colonial legacy, exhorting Africa to "reclaim its destiny" and warning of the ongoing economic and institutional effects of historical external domination.
The visit holds geopolitical significance for Nairobi, which is already preparing to host the upcoming France-Africa Summit in May 2026 - a major diplomatic milestone showcasing Kenya's ambition to deepen ties beyond its traditional partners.
