Government condemns Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s remarks, warns against hate speech

The Government, through its spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, expressed concern over Kahiga’s comments, emphasising that leaders must uphold the values of the Constitution and promote peace, unity, and dignity among all Kenyans.

The government has condemned Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga for making divisive remarks about the late Raila Odinga, describing them as reckless, insensitive, and deeply unfortunate at a time when the nation is mourning the former Prime Minister.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, the government, through its spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, expressed concern over Kahiga’s comments, emphasising that leaders must uphold the values of the Constitution and promote peace, unity, and dignity among all Kenyans.

“Such utterances are not only regrettable but also extremely unfortunate, especially coming at a time when our nation is still mourning the death of Raila Odinga, a respected statesman and one of Kenya's founding pillars of democracy. We condemn such divisive, insensitive, and disrespectful remarks,” said Mwaura.

"Leaders may disagree and differ in opinions, but Kenya belongs to all of us. The government, therefore, calls upon all leaders across the political divide to uphold the values of the Constitution and to honour the memory of the late Raila Odinga by promoting peace, unity, and dignity among all Kenyans.”

The government also welcomed Kahiga’s resignation as vice chair of the Council of Governors (CoG) and strongly urged the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to take stern action against any leader found fanning division and ethnic animosity.

“We strongly urge NCIC and DCI to take stern action against any leader found fanning division and ethnic animosity,” Mwaura urged.

Mwaura emphasised that political leaders - during times of national grief - should provide healing, hope, and unity, warning that reckless and provocative remarks could undermine the nation’s hard-earned cohesion and peace.

In the viral video, Kahiga, speaking in the local dialect, suggested that the government’s development priorities had been skewed toward the Nyanza region under the political arrangement between President William Ruto and the late Raila Odinga.

“You guys can see what had been planned, but God brought something up. Now it’s total confusion. We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us,” said Kahiga.

He added that the former Prime Minister’s death “levelled the playing field” and forced politicians to return to the drawing board ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“The plan that had been hatched… all goodies were being directed there because of tomorrow’s plans… but God came and brought this thing,” he added.

The remarks drew condemnation from both government and opposition figures.
