Kwale gears up for International Cycling Event, eyes tourism boost

Kwale County has welcomed the International Cycling Event, which is set to bring significant economic activity and renewed attention to the coastal region.
County officials say the high-profile sporting competition, taking place between November 19 and 23, 2025, has already sparked preparations among local businesses eager to tap into opportunities in tourism, hospitality, and transport.

Governor Fatuma Achani met officials from the Kenya Cycling Federation (KCF) to review final arrangements for the event, which brings together cyclists from 36 countries.
The meeting focused on logistics, partnerships, and ways to ensure residents benefit directly from the competition.
According to Fatuma, the cycling event has positioned Kwale as a growing sports tourism hub, attracting national attention and potential investors.
“This event is already stimulating local economic activity. Hotels are preparing, roads are being improved, and our traders are ready to serve visitors,” she said.
She noted that the county has prioritised collaboration with national agencies to ensure both infrastructure and community participation are in place ahead of the event.
KCF officials, led by Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Mwangi, said Kwale’s coastal terrain and challenging routes have made it a natural choice for the international competition.
“Kwale offers a combination of scenic beauty and competitive routes. It represents the environment that makes cycling both demanding and rewarding,” said Mwangi.
The county government has also identified the event as a chance to empower youth and small enterprises through service provision and cultural exhibitions during the week-long tournament.
The International Cycling Event marks the second time Kenya is hosting the competition, following the inaugural edition in Iten, Eldoret.
Officials say the upcoming contest not only raises Kwale’s global profile but also sets a foundation for future international sporting events in the region.
