Garissa MP Dekow calls for urgent help to address crisis arising from raging flood waters

Garissa Township MP Major Dekow M Barrow on Sunday called for quick intervention to address the humanitarian crisis caused by the River Tana floods in his constituency.

The MP emphasized the urgent need for food and shelter as he urged the national government's disaster response multiagency team and humanitarian organizations to hasten intervention measures in aid of the displaced families.

“The displaced have been rendered homeless after the River Tana burst its banks affecting residents of Bulla Kamor, Vumbi, Bulla Sheikh, Winsor, Iftin and Bulla Nyuki," he said.

Dekow also expressed concern about the condition of the displaced who were camping in schools, and the Farmers Training Centre among other institutions in the town as the heavy rains continued to pound Garissa town on Sunday evening.

The evening rain disrupted traffic in the town and flooded residential houses and business premises along the main streets of Garissa town.

The MP also raised the plight of the farmers whose farms were submerged after he toured the affected farmlands in the area together with members of the Garissa Farmers Network.

He said families who solely relied on farming have no alternative livelihood hence the need for immediate support of food aid and a sustainable support program after the flood water recedes.

Apart from the devastating impact of the floods on the crops, some farmers have also lost livestock that were trapped in the flooded farms.
