The matatu driver was driving from Kerugoya to Kagio via Ngaru - Gatuto road when he lost control of the vehicle which later rolled and overturned.
Eyewitnesses say the driver lost control of the vehicle and was trying to negotiate a sharp corner when the matatu rolled several times.
Kirinyaga County Police Commander, Andrew Naibei, confirmed the incident saying investigations had been launched to establish the cause of the fatal accident.
"As a result of the impact, four passengers died on the spot while others sustained injuries and were rushed to Kerogoya Hospital where they were left while undergoing treatment," police said.
According to Naibei, the matatu driver was taking a shorter route to Baricho when the accident happened.
The deceased were transferred to the morgue at Kerugoya County Referral Hospital, where they await post-mortem examinations.
The heavily damaged matatu was later towed to Kerugoya Police Station, where it is being held pending inspection.
Naibei advised drivers to be careful on the roads to avoid such accidents.
