Kenya Power teams up with administrative officers in Mandera on electrical safety awareness

NGAO representatives were trained in identifying and reporting faulty power lines during the rainy season.

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has joined forces with the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) in Mandera to raise awareness about the dangers of unsafe electricity usage and accidental contact.

Through this collaboration, the company aims to educate the public on preventing electrical accidents and provide information on reporting accidents and unsafe situations promptly, especially during the rainy season.

Benjamin Kilonzo, the Safety Engineer for KPLC in the North Eastern region, emphasised the importance of involving area chiefs in Mandera to relay safety messages to residents effectively.

"Chiefs are closer to residents at the grassroots level, so we want them to take the message closer to people to avoid more disasters," Kilonzo said.

NGAO representatives were trained in identifying and reporting faulty power lines during the rainy season.

Kilonzo urged the public to stay away from sagging power lines and report any concerns to Kenya Power.

"I call upon the public to report these incidents using a newly introduced product by the company, USSD code; *977#" he added.

Additionally, NGAO members were educated on detecting and reporting illegal wiring in remote areas to prevent electrocution incidents.

Mandera County Commissioner, Hillary Ochako, urged NGAO representatives to ensure that the awareness campaign reaches every corner of Mandera to prevent future disasters.

"I want every chief in Mandera to ensure the awareness reaches every individual to avoid more disasters in the future," Ochgako said.

The awareness campaign follows several recent reported cases in the county where five individuals lost their lives due to electrocution.
