A recent visit by a Senate committee to the New Life Prayer Centre in Mavueni, Kilifi County has sparked a heated controversy after claims surfaced suggesting financial support from the church's preacher, Ezekiel Odero. Odero, however, has vehemently refuted any involvement in funding the Senate ad hoc committee's investigation into the Shakahola deaths, expressing surprise at the turn of events.
During the Senate's inspection, committee members led by Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana cleared Odero of any connection to the alleged deaths of congregants. Contrary to earlier speculations, no mortuary or cemetery was found on the premises, debunking previous allegations from the public. According to Mungatana, areas suspected of housing deceased individuals were discovered to serve alternative functions, dispelling the ongoing rumors.

Despite the visit shedding light on the matter, questions have arisen about the funding source for the Senate committee's visit. Odero's lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, clarified that their trip to Kilifi was primarily to address issues surrounding a planned crusade. However, the crusade faced consecutive setbacks after police halted the events citing security concerns, despite the absence of substantial justifications.
Following the encounters with local authorities, Ombeta expressed optimism that Odero would eventually be granted permission to proceed with the scheduled event, expected to take place on October 21 and 22. Despite persistent efforts, the preacher's camp continues to encounter obstacles and alleged interference from various quarters, adding further complexity to an already contentious situation.
As the controversy surrounding the New Life Prayer Centre unfolds, public scrutiny remains intense, prompting a broader examination of the underlying circumstances and the intricacies of the ongoing investigation.
