The utility’s Managing Director, Nahashon Muguna, also reassured residents that the city’s water supply remains adequate, emphasising that the new schedule is aimed at ensuring fair and consistent access across Nairobi.

Nairobi residents have been urged to brace for water supply adjustments throughout June as the city’s water agency rolls out a new distribution plan aimed at equitable access across all neighbourhoods.

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) said areas including Lavington, Kileleshwa, Kilimani, Lang’ata, Karen, Embakasi, Roysambu, Westlands, Kasarani and Kabete will experience changes in their water schedules.

According to the company, only a few locations, primarily key institutions and their surrounding areas, will continue to receive a daily water supply.

These include the University of Nairobi and customers along the Mamlaka line, Kenyatta National Hospital and Valley Road, Daystar University and its environs, as well as Upper Hill’s Matumbato, Kiambere, Masaba areas and Kenya Road.

Other areas that will maintain daily supply include Elgon Road, Gikomba Market, Pumwani Hospital, Ngara, Forest Road, Waruku and surrounding neighbourhoods, Kenyatta University, Kahawa Barracks and Embakasi Barracks.

While the changes have widely been interpreted as water rationing, NCWSC board chairperson Arnold Karanja clarified that the initiative is broader than that.

“It is a programme encompassing other areas which were not receiving water, such as Utawala among others,” Karanja told the Nation.

The utility’s Managing Director, Nahashon Muguna, also reassured residents that the city’s water supply remains adequate, emphasising that the new schedule is aimed at ensuring fair and consistent access across Nairobi.

The new distribution schedule will also alter the usual water supply patterns in several estates, including parts of Karen, where residents living around Bogani Last Road, Mukoma Road, Ndovu Road, Swara Road, and neighbouring areas will receive water from Thursday afternoon to Monday afternoon.

In Riverside, the revised plan introduces a zoned supply. Areas from Chiromo to Prime Bank will receive water between Monday noon and Friday noon. From Ring Road to Kirichwa Road, supply will run from Tuesday noon to Thursday noon, while Riverside Lane to Strathmore School will have access from Saturday noon to Monday noon.

The adjustments come as Nairobi begins partial operations of the Northern Water Collector Tunnel, a flagship project expected to inject an additional 140 million litres of water per day upon full completion.

Utawala is one of the first neighbourhoods to benefit from the new water source. In March, Karanja announced that residents in the area were receiving piped water twice a week for the first time.

“Not all estates have been connected to water pipes, but we are doing everything to complete the process. Those who are already connected are getting water for the first time. Our teams are on the ground, and you can always get in touch with them,” he said after touring the area.

Among the Utawala estates that recently received piped water after years of dry taps are Summit Court, Swan Villa, Olympia Estate, Rubis and Ridgeway.

The water company has urged residents to familiarise themselves with the new schedule and report any issues to field teams deployed across affected areas.
