Mandera ECDE programme receives training and learning materials boost from donor

Deputy Governor Ali Mohamud announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the county government and the INSPIRED project.
The Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) sector in Mandera County has received a significant boost through the INSPIRED project, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
The initiative includes training for ECDE teachers on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and the provision of essential teaching and learning materials aimed at improving the quality of early childhood education in Mandera.

Mandera Deputy Governor Ali Mohamud officially opened a six-day workshop in Mandera town for ECDE coaches selected from all 12 sub-counties.
They will serve as Trainers of Trainers (TOTs), and are expected to play a crucial role in sharing knowledge and skills with grassroots educators.
“This sector is the foundation of a child’s learning journey. With properly trained teachers and adequate teaching materials, our young learners are better positioned to thrive in the next levels of education,” said Ali.
The deputy governor also announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Mandera County Government and the INSPIRED project. This will support the effective implementation of the ECDE programme through joint mobilisation efforts.
“We anticipate improved learning outcomes from these TOTs—especially in foundational literacy, numeracy, and executive function skills,” Ali said.
He thanked the donor partners for their continued support.

In October 2023, Mandera Governor Mohamed Khalif launched an education task force to identify challenges and address gaps in the ECDE sector, technical and vocational training institutions, and the Duksi-ECDE integration programme.
Last month, Governor Mohamed confirmed the county had begun implementing the task force’s recommendations, with particular emphasis on enhancing the school feeding programme as one of the key areas of improvement.
“Over the past two years, we’ve significantly increased the budget for the ECDE sector to ensure quality learning,” he said.
This investment has already yielded results, with ECDE enrolment rising from 23,499 in 2021 to 32,300 in 2023 and reaching 35,238 by December 2024.
