DCP defends Orwoba after UDA expulsion, slams Speaker Kingi for defying court order

The party highlighted Orwoba’s bravery in questioning Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua regarding the lost funds of Kenyans promised jobs abroad.
The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has come to the defence of Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba following her expulsion from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The party, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, criticised Senate Speaker Amason Kingi for swiftly declaring her seat vacant, even while a court order was in place, calling the move a dangerous signal of shrinking democratic space under President William Ruto’s leadership.

DCP described Orwoba's expulsion as a clear display of political intolerance.
"The recent expulsion of Senator Gloria Orwoba by UDA is a clear sign of growing political intolerance," stated DCP. "What were her so-called crimes?"
“The Senate Speaker’s rush to declare her seat vacant, even while a court order was in place, is a dangerous signal of the shrinking democratic space under President Ruto’s leadership,” DCP said.
Unfairly targeted
According to DCP, Senator Orwoba was unfairly targeted for taking part in a cultural event in Kisii County, which brought together leaders from various political affiliations, including Kisii Governor Simba Arati of ODM, in a gesture of unity to welcome Former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i.
The new political party affirmed that while parties like UDA may claim to champion democracy, their actions tell a different story.
"The Democracy for Citizens Party is the true embodiment of democratic values in Kenya. While parties like UDA claim to stand for democracy, their actions prove otherwise,” stated DCP.
The party highlighted Orwoba’s bravery in questioning Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua regarding the lost funds of Kenyans promised jobs abroad.
DCP praised her bold stance as an example of leadership, challenging the system to seek the truth.
"She had the courage to question CS Alfred Mutua on behalf of Kenyans who were defrauded with promises of jobs abroad. Her boldness may have unsettled him, but that is precisely what real leadership looks like," DCP said.
Fierce advocate of girls' rights
DCP reaffirmed its support for Orwoba, highlighting her contributions as a fierce advocate of girls' rights, justice, and human dignity.
The party also vowed to continue defending the rights of all Kenyans to speak, question, and participate in the democratic process without fear of reprisal.
“Senator Gloria Orwoba has been a fearless voice for girls' rights, justice, and human dignity. She is not alone—DCP stands with her. We will continue to defend every Kenyan’s right to speak, question, and participate without fear.”
The ruling party, led by President William Ruto, expelled Orwoba for what it described as gross misconduct and breach of the party’s constitution and code of conduct.
Unanimously endorsed
UDA Secretary-General Hassan Omar said the decision to expel her was unanimously endorsed by the party’s national executive committee, following recommendations by the disciplinary committee.
Orwoba was found guilty of several violations, including making public statements that damaged the party’s reputation and repeatedly ignoring summons to appear before the disciplinary committee.
Despite being given multiple chances to present her defence, she opted to engage through lawyers and failed to appear in person.
However, on Wednesday, the High Court issued a conservatory order suspending her expulsion.
Justice Lawrence Mugambi issued the orders following an application by Orwoba, which sought to suspend the UDA party disciplinary committee expelling her.
"That pending hearing and determination of this application, a conservatory order is hereby issued suspending the implementation of the decision of the UDA Party Disciplinary Committee dated 16/05/2025 expelling the petitioner herein as a member of the UDA party and/or a nominated senator," the order reads.
UDA had expelled Orwoba for what it described as gross misconduct and breach of the party’s constitution and code of conduct.
