President Ruto hints at UDA-ODM coalition ahead of 2027 elections

President William Ruto has hinted at a possible coalition between his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the funeral service of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo, Siaya County, Ruto pledged to support and strengthen ODM, signalling a continued partnership between the two parties.

“I want to tell you, we will respect ODM. We will support you to hold ODM together. ODM must be strong as we go to 2027 because that is the way we are going to have a strong government. Political parties are the foundation of any meaningful democracy,” he said.
The President described ODM as a party with deep national roots and a rich history of struggle for justice and reform. He emphasised that its founder, Raila Odinga, played a central role in shaping Kenya’s democratic journey.
“We will either form the next government or be part of the next government. That is what we can do,” Ruto added, drawing applause from mourners at the university grounds.
He stressed that the government would continue to recognise and respect ODM’s role in national politics, warning that no individual should be allowed to weaken the party.
Ruto also reflected on his personal relationship with the late leader, describing Raila as a mentor and political engineer who inspired many of today’s leaders. He recounted their recent consultations on national matters, even during Odinga’s final months.
“Raila’s contribution to the unity of our nation and the fight for democracy will not be forgotten. Our responsibility now is to build on that foundation and make Kenya stronger,” he said.
The President’s remarks come amid a period of political realignment following Raila’s death, as ODM navigates internal succession debates and the government seeks to maintain cohesion among coalition partners.
Siaya Governor James Orengo and Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga also urged the government to safeguard political parties as part of Raila’s legacy, highlighting the need for strong, independent institutions in Kenya’s democracy.
