Kalonzo-Sifuna ticket sparks excitement among Ruto critics as opposition unity intensifies ahead of 2027

According to a TIFA survey released on May 14, 2026, 28 per cent of respondents who support opposition candidates preferred a ticket pairing of Kalonzo Musyoka and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

A joint presidential ticket between Wiper Patriotic Front Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is exciting President William Ruto’s critics, who now believe the pair could make the incumbent Head of State serve for only one term.
Multiple interviews The Eastleigh Voice had with Opposition insiders revealed that Kalonzo and Sifuna stand as the most favourite pair to stop Ruto from earning a second term in the 2027 presidential election race that is expected to be a knife-edge contest.
The excitement hinges on an opinion poll last month by Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) that revealed growing support for a possible opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 General Election, with a Kalonzo Musyoka-Edwin Sifuna presidential ticket emerging as the most preferred among opposition supporters.
According to the survey released on May 14, 2026, 28 per cent of respondents who support opposition candidates preferred a ticket pairing of Kalonzo Musyoka and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
The poll placed a Rigathi Gachagua-Kalonzo Musyoka pairing second with 25 per cent support, revealing a close contest over who could lead a united opposition front against President William Ruto in 2027.

“Among Opposition candidate supporters, the combination of Kalonzo and Matiangi attracts slightly more support than that of Kalonzo and Sifuna. How much influence public opinion will have in this selection process remains to be seen,” the report indicated.
Despite intense jostling among Opposition leaders for the top ticket, it is widely understood amongst them that the only way to front a formidable challenge to Ruto’s reelection juggernaut is through a popular ticket devoid of controversy and disdain.
Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa, who has reiterated his intention to run for president, is confident that Opposition leaders seeking the country’s top seat will eventually agree on a single flagbearer.
Speaking during a televised interview on Sunday, June 21, 2026, Wamalwa said he had already received clearance from his party to seek the presidency and was among six opposition leaders currently positioning themselves for the race.
“I am running for president; it is not my first time. We are now ready. As the party leader of DAP-K, I have already been cleared to run. In our coalition, I have five other colleagues who have been cleared, including Kalonzo, Gachagua, Martha Karua, Matiang’i, and JB Muturi. We are six of us, but we all know that we can’t all be the sixth. We will agree,” Wamalwa said.
“We all qualify to occupy that office, but we cannot all do it at the same time. Whoever we agree on will only be the first amongst equals, and we will all unite behind that candidate. All for one and one for all, that is the musketeer spirit that made us succeed in the NARC movement of 2002, and that is the path we want to follow.”
Wamalwa also dismissed assertions that the opposition is afraid of revealing its flagbearer, urging their supporters to remain calm and be patient.
He promised that the opposition would remain united beyond August 2027.
“We have all agreed that we must stay united until the 10th of August 2027 and beyond. We must be united behind one candidate. We all belong to the one-term movement, and for it to succeed, we must adopt the all hands on deck approach and gather all and scatter none principle,” he said.
The opposition alliance has brought together several heavyweight politicians, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi.
The leaders have been conducting joint political activities across the country while seeking to consolidate support against the Kenya Kwanza administration.
However, the question of who will carry the coalition’s presidential flag has increasingly emerged as a potential fault line.

Earlier this month, Karua and Matiang’i publicly backed the use of opinion polls and other scientific methods to determine the coalition’s presidential candidate, arguing that a transparent process would help avoid internal disputes and strengthen the alliance ahead of the election.
Kalonzo, who has previously contested the presidency, has also unveiled his own presidential platform, describing it as part of preparations for a possible 2027 bid while insisting that opposition leaders remain united despite pursuing individual political programmes.
Kalonzo seems to be an agreeable candidate for Gachagua as well. Speaking recently during a tour of the Ukambani region, Gachagua hinted that Kalonzo could emerge as the United Opposition’s presidential flagbearer.
Gachagua praised Musyoka’s leadership potential and rallied the Kamba community behind him. “The Kamba community is the one that will redeem Kenya from the current administration because your vote is the most trusted and decisive in the Republic of Kenya. The Kamba vote is a vote you can take to the bank,” he told residents during a rally.
Sarah Elderkin, a long-time speechwriter and biographer to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in an in-depth analytical piece in Sunday Standard of June 21, 2026, noted that the prospect of this complementary duo (Kalonzo and Sifuna) bringing together youth and energy on one hand, and age and experience on the other, is inspiring.
“Sifuna, aged 44, is the comparatively new kid on the block, arriving with a charisma and fighting spirit that we see nowhere else. His exuberant energy has particularly resonated with young people, offering them a glimpse of what they have long yearned for and what could be achieved. Old voters, too, should rally behind him if they can recognise what is good for them,” argued Elderkin.
She goes ahead to describe Kalonzo, aged 73, as the elder statesman, a man carelessly vilified for years because of his calm and measured approach. A boorish electorate, apparently with no time for such quiet qualities, or no wisdom to appreciate them, has repeatedly erred towards loud-mouthed yet smooth-talking crooks and conmen.
