2025 CAVB Men's Championships: GSU and Prisons fall to North Africans as KPA wins five-set thriller
Kenyan clubs GSU and Kenya Prisons suffered defeats to North African giants in their final group matches at the 2025 CAVB Men’s Club Championships, while KPA edged through to the Round of 16 with a thrilling five-set win over Litto of Cameroon.
The gulf in class between Kenyan clubs and North African teams showed on Thursday as GSU and Kenya Prisons lost to Al Ahly of Egypt and Libya's El Etihad in their final group games at the ongoing 2025 CAVB Men's Volleyball Club Championships in Libya.
GSU had to settle for second place in Group B after having their four-match winning streak halted by 16-time champions Al Ahly.
Al Ahly whitewashed GSU 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-22) to register their fifth win of the tournament, finishing top of Group B with 15 points - five more than GSU.

Despite the loss, GSU were already assured of their place in the last 16, a target that eluded Kenya Prisons, who finished fifth with five points in Group C after suffering a 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-16) loss to group leaders El Etihad.
By failing to finish in the top four positions in their group, Prisons - who placed third in the competition last year - have now been relegated to the classification play-offs of the 23-team tournament.
In Group D, KPA secured their slot in the Round of 16 with a dramatic 3-2 (25-18, 25-19, 18-25, 21-25, 15-7) win over Litto of Cameroon.
The win saw them finish second in their group with nine points and, like GSU, they will now face one of the four third-placed teams in the Round of 16. Teams that won their groups will be paired with teams that finished fourth.
