Yoweri Museveni secures NRM nomination for 2026 presidential election
President Yoweri Museveni pledged to focus on wealth creation by ensuring Ugandans join the money economy, free education for children in government schools, and the completion of road projects.
Uganda President Yoweri Museveni has officially been nominated as the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for the 2026 presidential elections, setting the stage for his bid to extend his decades-long rule.
Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, the Returning Officer for Presidential Nominations, on Tuesday confirmed that Museveni had fulfilled all requirements under the Presidential Elections Act, Cap 179.

“I want to thank the NRM members for entrusting and electing me as the NRM Presidential flag bearer for the 2026-2031 term,” Museveni said after his nomination was sealed.
He outlined his government’s record and future priorities, citing progress in economic growth and infrastructure.
“In this economy, the GDP of Uganda has doubled in recent years from $34 billion (Sh4.4 trillion) to $66 billion (Sh8.5 trillion). You have everything today that you lacked in the past: electricity, roads, telephones, manpower, educated people, and peace. That’s why we are being flooded by many investors because they are looking for a peaceful and profitable area where to invest,” he said.
Museveni pledged to focus on wealth creation by ensuring Ugandans join the money economy, free education for children in government schools, and the completion of road projects.
He also highlighted the need to fight crime and corruption, safeguard health supplies, and expand access to clean water in all villages.
The president is expected to drive from the Electoral Commission headquarters in Lweza to Kololo, where thousands of NRM supporters are waiting to celebrate his nomination.
Under the law, an aspiring presidential candidate must be a Ugandan by birth, a registered voter, and at least 18 years old.
They must present certified copies of educational qualifications showing a minimum of Advanced Level or its equivalent, and have the support of at least 100 registered voters drawn from not less than 98 districts - two-thirds of Uganda’s administrative regions.
Museveni, 80, last week formally declared his intention to seek a seventh term in office.
