Rwanda extends business operating hours during FIFA World Cup

Under the temporary arrangement, all business establishments, including hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and other hospitality venues, will be allowed to operate until 3 a.m. from Monday to Thursday.

The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has announced a temporary extension of operating hours for all businesses across the country to allow football fans to watch and enjoy matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a public notice issued on Friday, June 12, RDB said the revised operating hours will take effect immediately and remain in place until July 20, 2026, when the tournament concludes.
Under the temporary arrangement, all business establishments, including hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and other hospitality venues, will be allowed to operate until 3 a.m. from Monday to Thursday.
From Friday to Sunday, as well as on public holidays falling within the tournament period, establishments will be permitted to remain open until 4 a.m. Before the announcement, businesses had to close at 1:00 am on Mondays to Thursdays, and at 2:00 am on Fridays to Sundays.
The move is intended to accommodate football enthusiasts, residents and visitors wishing to watch late-night World Cup fixtures and participate in related entertainment activities, according to the RDB.

Despite the extension, RDB stressed that existing regulations governing business operations remain fully in force.
These include restrictions on noise pollution, compliance with health and safety standards, and the prohibition of serving alcohol to persons under the age of 18.
The agency also reminded hospitality operators not to serve alcohol to individuals who appear intoxicated.
In addition, consumers were urged to drink responsibly and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol.
The FIFA World Cup 2026, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, is one of the world's most-watched sporting events.
It is expected to attract significant interest from fans in Rwanda, with many establishments organising screenings and themed events throughout the tournament.
