Kenya's Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Korir Sing'Oei also expressed his support for the agreement, commending the leadership of both nations and Turkey in this vital diplomatic initiative.

The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu on Thursday welcomed the Somalia-Ethiopia joint declaration to resolve their dispute over the breakaway Somaliland region and land-locked Ethiopia’s push for sea access.

Workneh expressed his commendation for the agreement, brokered by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan,

emphasising the importance of such diplomatic efforts in addressing shared challenges and fostering stability and prosperity in the Horn of Africa.

"This accord is a significant milestone in strengthening the social fabric between our two nations and demonstrates the determination to resolve disputes amicably," said Workneh.

"IGAD remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting its Member States in their pursuit of sustainable solutions through dialogue, partnership, and mutual cooperation."

Erdogan said he hoped the deal would be “the first step towards a new beginning based on peace and cooperation between Somalia and Ethiopia”, and would eventually ensure that Ethiopia – the most populous land-locked country in the world – gains sea access.

“I believe with the meeting we had today, especially with Ethiopia’s demands to access the sea, my brother Sheikh Mohamud will give the necessary support for accessing the sea,” the Turkish leader said.

The Ankara Agreement also received praise from the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat.

In a statement released shortly after the signing, Faki applauded the high level of responsibility displayed by the leaders of Somalia and Ethiopia. He encouraged both leaders to implement, without delay, the relevant measures adopted.

The Chairperson further congratulated President Erdogan for his support to the two parties in their shared commitment to resolve their differences through consultation and dialogue, in the best interests of their countries and peoples.

Kenya's Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Korir Sing'Oei also expressed his support for the agreement, commending the leadership of both nations and Turkey in this vital diplomatic initiative.
