Samsung confirms Galaxy Unpacked 2025 for July 9

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to break records in the foldable category, with industry insiders predicting a thickness of between 3.9 and 4.54 millimetres when unfolded, and 8.9 to 9.5 millimetres when folded.

Samsung is set to unveil the next evolution of its foldable technology at the highly anticipated Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event, which was officially confirmed for Wednesday, July 9, at 10 am in Brooklyn, New York.

This year, the spotlight will be on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, along with new entries in Samsung's wearable ecosystem, including an upgraded Galaxy Watch.

Under the bold tagline, “The Ultra Experience Is Ready to Unfold,” Samsung released a dramatic teaser featuring two smartphones whose corners radiate light before one opens to reveal a sleek, expansive inner display.

The short video emphasised a slimmer profile, underscoring the company’s renewed commitment to form-factor innovation and a clear signal to its increasingly aggressive competitors.

What to expect

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to break records in the foldable category, with industry insiders predicting a thickness of between 3.9 and 4.54 millimetres when unfolded, and 8.9 to 9.5 millimetres when folded.

These dimensions would make it thinner than Oppo’s current flagship, the Find N5, which measures 4.21 mm unfolded and 8.93 mm folded and is the current world’s thinnest phone.

Samsung is also rumoured to be upgrading the Fold 7’s core hardware, including a 200-megapixel ultra-high-resolution wide-angle main camera, the same sensor featured in the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

This would mark a significant leap in imaging performance, elevating the Fold’s appeal for power users and mobile content creators alike.

Flip 7: small yet significant upgrades

While Samsung has kept most details about the Galaxy Z Flip 7 under wraps, sources suggest the new ‘clamshell’ model will feature a slightly larger display and a higher-capacity battery, addressing common user complaints about screen size and battery life in earlier versions.

The Flip 7 may mark the debut of Samsung’s in-house Exynos application processor (AP) in a foldable device.

Until now, Samsung’s foldables have exclusively used Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, praised for their performance and thermal efficiency in the compact foldable form factor.

If confirmed, this shift would signal Samsung’s broader strategy to reduce dependency on external suppliers and showcase the competitiveness of its own silicon.

Samsung’s latest foldables arrive at a critical time.

According to data from IDC, the company's global market share in foldables has dropped to 32.9 per cent in 2024, a sharp decline from over 80 per cent in the early years of the category. The rivals are rapidly catching up: Huawei holds 23.1 per cent, Lenovo 17 per cent, Honor 10.4 per cent, and Vivo 5.3 per cent.

With competitors pushing out increasingly refined and affordable alternatives, Samsung appears poised to fight back by doubling down on hardware innovation, industrial design, and tighter integration across its device ecosystem.

What users should watch out for is the major redesign, expecting significantly thinner foldables, possibly featuring new display technologies such as brighter panels, better crease reduction, or under-display camera enhancements.

Samsung may also introduce upgraded and more refined sensors, promising better camera quality and health tracking across both phones and wearables.

In terms of performance, look out for new and faster processors, including the potential debut of Samsung’s own Exynos chip in a foldable device. This is a move that could improve integration and efficiency.

Together, these updates point to a more seamless, powerful, and refined user experience and signal Samsung’s intent to reclaim its dominance in the foldable space. Let us wait and see.
