Shujaa off to mixed start at Hong Kong Sevens

The loss dropped Shujaa to second place in Pool C, with four points, behind Great Britain, who lead the pool with six points.

Kenya's national rugby sevens team, Shujaa, had a mixed opening day at the 2025 Hong Kong Sevens, defeating Spain 19-0 in their first match before suffering a 12-7 loss to Great Britain in their second game.

Shujaa's victory over Spain was a welcome revenge for their 14-7 loss to the Europeans in December during the Cape Town Sevens. The win was also a testament to Shujaa's determination to redeem themselves after a disappointing performance at the Vancouver Sevens in February, where they lost all five matches.

Against Spain, Shujaa started strong, with Patrick Odongo outsprinting his markers to score a try in the third minute. Nygel Amaitsa converted George Ooro's sixth-minute try to give Kenya a 12-0 halftime lead. Samuel Asati scored a try in the ninth minute of the second half, which Amaitsa converted to stretch Shujaa's lead to 19-0.

However, Shujaa's momentum was halted by Great Britain, who defeated them 12-7 in their second match. Despite a bright start, with Odongo scoring a try in the third minute, Shuja's defence was not as resilient as it was against Spain, allowing Great Britain to come back and tie the score 7-7 at halftime. Great Britain scored the only try of the second half to secure a 12-7 victory.

The loss dropped Shujaa to second place in Pool C, with four points, behind Great Britain, who lead the pool with six points. Spain recovered to defeat France 19-12 and is third with three points, while France is bottom with two.

Shujaa will face France in their final pool match on Saturday at 5:16 am, needing a win to guarantee progress to the main cup quarters for the first time this season.
