A short social media post has landed former Mali Prime Minister Moussa Mara behind bars, with authorities accusing him of threatening the state’s image and defying its authority.
Mara, who briefly served as prime minister between 2014 and 2015, was charged on Friday by a cybercrime court in Bamako after sharing a message on X (formerly Twitter) in which he talked about visiting political detainees and committing to seek justice for them.

According to the prosecutor's office, Mara now faces charges of “undermining the credibility of the state and opposing legitimate authority.”
The post in question was made on July 4 and quickly caught the attention of government officials, prompting his earlier summons for questioning.
His legal team has condemned the charges and the ongoing detention, describing the process as unjust.
“They would have more to say soon,” the lawyers said in a statement.
