Somali PM launches free electricity programme for 150 health facilities

Prime Minister Hamsa said Somalis have lived for many years without reliable electricity, which has hindered the ability of essential services such as health care and education to operate effectively.

Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has inaugurated a new electrification programme that will supply free electricity to 150 health facilities across the country, marking what officials say is a major step in expanding energy access to public services.

Speaking at the launch event on Wednesday, Prime Minister Hamsa said Somalis have lived for many years without reliable electricity, which has hindered the ability of essential services such as health care and education to operate effectively.

He described the programme as part of the Federal Government’s broader plan to strengthen infrastructure and extend services to communities that have long lacked them.

“The government has focused on ensuring that people have access to high-quality electricity and education,” Prime Minister Hamza said.

“All public services are fundamentally dependent on strong electricity. The electricity we are now delivering, which has been implemented across Somalia, is environmentally friendly and is called Green Energy. We hope that the Somali people will have the ability to afford it.”

The Prime Minister explained that the programme is not only aimed at expanding access but also at introducing energy that is renewable and environmentally sustainable.

He said that by investing in clean power, the government hopes to improve the functioning of health centres and schools while at the same time promoting a sustainable future.

Hamza emphasised that the initiative carries national importance, as it is designed to meet the basic needs of the population and lay the foundation for long-term development.

“This step is very significant for the country,” he said. “It marks progress in the energy sector, and the government is committed to expanding electricity services so that all communities can benefit.”

Officials who attended the ceremony described the project as a milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to rebuild national infrastructure. They said the electrification of health facilities would directly improve service delivery in both rural and urban areas, where clinics often face difficulties operating without reliable power.

The Federal Government has presented the initiative as a model for future energy projects. By relying on renewable energy sources, officials believe Somalia can reduce its dependence on imported fuel and cut the high costs associated with running health and education services.

The use of green energy is also expected to support the country’s environmental commitments while offering a more sustainable energy future.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Hamsa also highlighted the role of electricity in improving people’s daily lives. He said the new project would enhance the quality of health care by ensuring that hospitals and clinics can operate essential medical equipment without interruption.

He added that schools powered by stable electricity would be able to offer better learning environments for students.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the government will continue to prioritise access to electricity in its development agenda.

“The government is determined to expand this initiative to cover all parts of the country,” he said. “We will not stop until electricity becomes available to every Somali household, every school, and every health centre.”

Officials say the project reflects the government’s determination to strengthen essential services that directly affect citizens. They believe that the introduction of renewable energy will also create opportunities for investment and employment, which could help drive economic recovery.

Somalia has struggled with limited access to electricity for decades. According to government estimates, only a fraction of the population has a consistent power supply, with many families relying on expensive and polluting generators. The new electrification project is part of a series of programs the Federal Government says it is implementing to address these challenges.
