Why Kenyan Premier League continues to miss out on Africa's top rankings

The Egyptian Premier League remains the top league in Africa according to a report released by The International Federation of Football History and Statistics.

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) body released their annual list of top five leagues for the year 2024 continent wise. The statistics which started from January 1-31 December 2024 maintained the Egyptian Premier League as the top League in Africa for the 5th consecutive time.

The league which gained four places in the SNL came ahead of the BOTOLA of Morocco which keeps a place on the African podium since 2018 and the Algerian LEAGUE A, in the TOP 3 for four consecutive years.

The top five African leagues are;

1- PREMIER LEAGUE  EGYPT

2 - BOTOLA. MOROCCO

3 - LEAGUE A. ALGERIA

4 - PREMIER LEAGUE  TANZANIA

5 - LIGUE PRO 1  TUNISIA

Despite being the horn of fun for a very passionate fanbase, Kenyan Premier League has failed consistently to feature on this list. The reasons behind this failure could be diverse ranging from occasional financial crises experienced in the past, poor governance of the league and occasional suspensions by FIFA.

Limited financial resources play a part in the league's failure to shine, as compared to the other leagues like the egyptian leagues our league lacks the financial muscle with many clubs lacking even sponsorship.

The performance of KPL clubs in CAF tournaments plays a significant role in the league’s ranking. Unfortunately, Kenyan teams have not consistently made significant strides in continental competitions. Although teams like Tusker, Gor Mahia, KCB and Kenya Police FC were  granted license by the CAF to participate in the 2024/25 CAF Inter Club Competitions their performance has not been convincing.

While the challenges are significant, there is hope for the KPL. Improved governance and accountability at FKF, increased investment in grassroots football, and stronger sponsorship deals could turn the tide.

 Additionally, better performance in CAF competitions would elevate the league's standing. For now, the KPL remains a league with untapped potential, waiting for strategic reforms to propel it to the heights of Africa’s football elite.
